American Payroll Association
Dan Maddux is Executive Director of the American Payroll Association (APA), the professional society for Payroll Professionals. The APA provides education and support to professionals who work in payroll, human resources, benefits, finance, and accounting, as well as software developers, service providers, and other professionals who service the payroll industry.

Dan joined the Association as the first employee hired the week of APA's inception in 1982 in New York City. Tackling many assignments and working his way up through the ranks, in 1992 he became one of the youngest Executive Directors to run an organization classified as a large association. Under his leadership, the APA membership has tripled. Its current membership exceeds 23,000.

San Antonio Learning Center

Since Dan has been the Executive Director, he has fulfilled several of his visions. In 1994, the APA opened its first multimedia (and award-winning) training center in San Antonio, Texas. The Association purchased the first building for its headquarters in 1999 in San Antonio, which became the second location for the San Antonio Learning Center.

Expanding on his vision for the Association to own and operate its own training centers, the APA established "The White House" Learning Center in Las Vegas. This state-of-the-art training facility has received major media coverage and accolades from the meeting and convention industry. The White House Las Vegas will soon be moving to  APA's new MEET facility in downtown Las Vegas opening in late 2008.

Dan Maddux created the concept of an Internet-based knowledge assessment tool. While its first application services the payroll community, the software is also licensed to other organizations that desire to have knowledge assessment calculators for the body of knowledge within their industry. Uses range from screening job candidates to preparing for certification or licensing examinations. Go to www.knowledgeassessments.org for more information.

Fulfilling one of Maddux's most sweeping visions to create a yearly national public awareness campaign, the Association founded National Payroll Week (NPW) in 1996. Observed during the week of Labor Day, NPW celebrates America's workers and their contributions to the nation's well-being through the payroll withholding system. NPW also acknowledges payroll professionals, who ensure that workers are paid accurately and on time and that payroll taxes are withheld and remitted properly. The NPW Web site contains year-round, consumer-focused payroll education resources.

The nation's leader in payroll education, the APA provides a complete curriculum of educational programs covering all aspects of payroll practice and all skill levels, offered through classroom instruction, web-based training, webinars and webcasts, and via teleconference. On-site courses are taught all over the United States and at the APA's two Payroll Learning Centers in San Antonio, TX and Las Vegas, NV.

The APA's Annual Congress, a four-and-a-half day convention occurring each spring, is the payroll profession's premier educational event. Featuring over 100 workshops, top experts and presenters from government and industry, and the world's largest exhibit hall of payroll-related technology and services, the APA Congress is the perfect venue for learning, networking, and test-driving payroll solutions. The American Payroll Association also offers two levels of professional certification, an extensive library of payroll compliance publications, and representation to present the payroll profession's perspective to policymakers and regulators. There are nearly 150 APA-affiliated local chapters, providing local networking opportunities and professional development to their members.

The APA pursues the following objectives:

1. To increase the Payroll Professional's skill level through education and mutual support.

2. To obtain recognition for payroll work as practiced in today's business and legislative environments and as a professional discipline.

3. To represent the Payroll Professional on the federal, state, and local level.

4. To provide public service education on payroll and employment issues.
